Profile of the College

P.V.K.N. Government college, Chittoor is situated at the outskirts of Chittoor Town. Initially, the campus covered an area of 112.42 acres. The land was acquired by the then R.D.O Chittoor by utilizing donor’s fund and college special fee funds. The patta lands acquired was about 78 acres and the remaining was poramboke and AWD lands transferred by the government in the name of the College. Nearly 31 acres of the college land was given to N.P.S Government College for Women and Krishnaveni Govt. Junior College for Girls and nearly 14 acres of land was occupied by Government agencies. Now, the campus spreads over an area of 54.86 acres. This College was affiliated to S.V. University, Tirupati in the year 1961 and got UGC recognition under 12 (f) and 2( b) in the year 1966. Now the college offers some PG courses besides UG courses.   The courses offered after the accreditation and strength particulars of students during the academic year 2013-2014 are as follows:

            The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards Quality enhancement and the outcome achieved  by the end of the year. The Academic year 2013-14 was started with a review of activities taken up during 2012-13. Department-wise targets and achievements were analyzed and revised targets were set for 2013-14.   The Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year 2013-14. Subject wise results in the university exams were analyzed and suggested measures to improve the standards.

  1. Initiatives for quality enhancement in teaching learning, evaluation and to review the progress of the academic programmes and various steps to be implemented to improve the quality of education.
  1. To strengthen the curricular, co-curricular, extra-curricular and extension activities.
  1. Motivate the faculty to attend seminars, workshops and conferences to acquaint themselves with the latest developments of the subject.
  1. Motivate faculty to pursue research activities.
  1. Encourage the staff to participate in the university committees and activities.
  1. Strengthen the linkages with institutions and industries in order to help the students avail the opportunities.
  1. To encourage the students to develop research bent of mind and to initiate to take up study projects.
  1. Encourage the students to participate in the extension activities.
  1. To motivate the students to join JKC to get training in job oriented skills.
  1. Advise the students to join Career Oriented add on courses.
  1. Encourage students to participate in sports and games.
  1. Encourage staff to contribute in evaluation techniques and course design at college and university level.
  1. Encourage the staff to start New PG Courses.

Curricular Aspects

The curriculum framed by the state council of higher education and S.V. University was implemented.

  • Human Values & Professional Ethics was introduced as a part of curriculum for I / II / III year students of B.A., / B.Sc., / B.Com.
  • M.Sc., Botany was started as self-supporting course during the year 2013-14 and the intake is 20.
  • Internal marks of 30 are allotted for the I / II / III of B.Com. students and external marks of 70 in all commerce papers.
  • Internal marks of 25 for I / II / III B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. students for Human Values and Professional Ethics and the remaining 75 marks for theory.
  • Annual academic plans were prepared to complete the syllabus effectively.

Teaching, Learning Evaluation

  • In addition to usual black board method of teaching, advanced Learning resources like OHP, LCD are being utilized for effective teaching.
  • Around 40 Guest Lectures from experts were arranged by all departments of the college during this academic year as a part of improving quality education.
  • Student seminars, group discussions, Quiz programmes were conducted in every department to create competitive spirit among the students.
  • Assignments of various types were given on critical topics to make the students thorough in the subjects.
  • Remedial coaching was given to the slow learners in all subjects and study material was also supplied to improve results in the university examinations.
  • The students were taken to educational and scientific tours, field trips to expose them to scientific, industrial, historical and natural environments.
  • Periodical tests were conducted to examine the understanding of the subjects by the students.
  • Half yearly examinations and Pre-final examinations were also conducted for the students.
  • Study material was prepared in all the subjects and got printed and supplied to the students to improve the success rate.

 

MANA TV Programmes :

Live Telecast of Lessons were arranged on various curricular topics on MANA TV throughout the year by a systematic time-table. (Telecast schedule). It was monitored by Sri G.M. Shanmugam, Lecturer in Physics. MANA TV programmes could certainly improve the quality of Learning.

Infrastructure development

  • LCD projectors were purchased and installed in all B.Com. classrooms.
  • The toilets were renovated.
  • Audio Visual equipments were purchased.
  • ICET counseling centre was established with the funding of APSCHE.
  • Development of garden around the college building was taken up to give a pleasant look.
  • Construction of the Centenary Reading hall is under progress with an estimated cost of Rs. 25 lakhs.
  • Rs. 40 lakhs have been spent from UGC funds to construct Ladies hostel as first installment and we are awaiting to get another Rs. 40 lakhs for the completion of the ladies hostel.
  • Computers, Photo copiers, Books& Journals were purchased from UGC funds.
  • B.Sc., Computer lab was totally renovated with an estimated cost of Rs. 3,19,600/-.
  • Electrical appliances were fixed in the newly constructed buildings worth of Rs. 1,45,400/-.

Quest for Improvement of Teacher quality

Sincere efforts were made by the staff to improve the Quality of Teaching by various activities and practices like participation in seminars, Refresher Courses, Orientation Programmes, organizing seminars, workshops and DRC programmes.

  • Sri P. Veerabhadra Reddy, Lecturer in Botany participated in a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Ethono-Botany conducted by the Department of Botany, S.V. University, Tirupati from 29th to 31st January, 2014.
  • Sri Korlam Sai Venkatesh, Lecturer in Botany presented a paper entitled Plants – the natural store house of drugs in UGC sponsored National Seminar on Biodiversity and conservation of Medicinal plants at GDC(M), Srikakulam from 7th to 8th August, 2013.
  • Sri Korlam Sai Venkatesh, Lecturer in Botany participated in a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Ethono-Botany conducted by the Department of Botany, S.V. University, Tirupati from 29th to 31st January, 2014 and delivered Extension Lectures at GDC, Palamaner.
  • Sri Korlam Sai Venkatesh, Lecturer in Botany is a Master Trainer in Red Ribbon Club and conducted training programmes as Resource Person for more than 15 Degree colleges in and around Chittoor town.
  • Smt. Y. Gnanaprasunamba, Lecturer in Botany participated in a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Ethono-Botany conducted by the Department of Botany, S.V. University, Tirupati from 29th to 31st January, 2014.
  • Dr. Mohano Behara, Lecturer in Botany presented a paper entitled Plants – the natural store house of drugs in UGC sponsored National Seminar on Biodiversity and conservation of Medicinal plants at GDC(M), Srikakulam from 7th to 8th August, 2013.
  • Dr. Mohano Behara, Lecturer in Botany has part of NSS coordinator has participated in the 166th Orientation Course organized by the Andhra University, Visakhapatnam from 20-01-2014 to 26-01-2014 on NSS – Empanelled Training Institution sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India.
  • Dr. S. Selvam, Lecturer in Economics participated in a workshop on Human Values and Professional Ethics held at P.V.K.N. Govt. College, Chittoor from 13-06-2013 to 15-06-2013.
  • Dr. S. Selvam, Lecturer in Economics is doing a Minor Research Project on “Impact of New Agricultural Technology and Farmer’s Suicides – Case study of Chittoor district”.

  • Sri B. Purushotham Naidu, Lecturer in Commerce has participated and presented a paper in AICTE sponsored national seminar at Sree Vidya Nikethan Institute of Management of 14-15 February, 2014.
  • Sri S. Saravana, Lecturer in Computer Application has attended Orientation Programme organized ASC of Maulana Azad National Urdu University and presented one paper in a national seminar.

MANA TV

Sri G.M. Shanmugam is the Coordinator for MANA TV, under his leadership 107 programmes have been telecasted out of 136. On an average more than 50 students attended each programme.

Awards and Recognition

  • Dr. G. Usha Rani, Reader in Telugu was awarded Kuppam Reddemma Literacy Award by District Chittoor Writers Association, Chittoor.
  • Dr. Mohano Behara, Lecturer in Botany was appointed as BOS member in Biotechnology for two years (2013-2015) at DRW College, (Autonomous), Gudur, SPSR Nellore District.

 

Field Trips

  • As a part of curriculum, Botany department conducted a field trip to Thalakona on 24-11-2013 and Biotrim on 07-02-2014.
  • As a part of curriculum, Zoology department conducted a field trip to Kalyan dam and S.V. Zoological Park, Tirupati.

Women Empowerment Cell

  • Dr. Kousar Jaha Begum Lecturer in Statistics and coordinator for Women Empowerment Cell solved the problems all women grievances as a part of Women Grievance and Redressal Cell.
  • Dr. Kousar Jaha Begum conducted an international Women’s Day on 8th March, 2014 with Dr. A. Latha as Chief Guest.

 

UGC activities

  • Dr. K. Subramanyam Naidu, Reader in Physics as UGC Coordinator supervised five seminars one workshop.
  • During his tenure, 10 MRPs have been submitted to UGC, SERO, Hyderabad and five MRPs are under progress.

Improvement in the quality of Library facilities

o   Enrolment of e-journals has been made to the UGC INFONET Digital Library consortium, Ahmadabad. o   Under UGC XI Plan CDC, Books and Journals were purchased. o   1372 books were purchased worth Rs. 2,92,946/-. o   1687 books for PG students is available totally to 55,279 books. o   Accession, stamping, labeling, numbering, classification and cataloging of all new arrivals has been almost completed and they were put on the shelves for use. o   Created databases for the new arrivals on the SOUL. o   Internet services have been provided to the students and staff.

Research and Consultancy

  • Sri Ch. Bapanayya, having an MRP entitled Stimulations on Transport properties of Amorphos Chalcogenide materials from 27-02-2013.
  • Sri Ch. Bapanayya published a research article entitled “ Durability of ——– Memory devices ina national journal “PRAMANA National of Physics.
  • Sri G.M. Shanmugam, having an MRP entitled “Solar Thermal Power Generation since August, 2012.
  • Sri T. Markandeya Naidu, Lecturer in Mathematics published a paper entitled Best Approximation in 2-Normed Almost Linear Space in International Journal of Engineering and Technology in December, 2013.
  • Sri T. Markandeya Naidu, Lecturer in Mathematics has published a paper entitled Best Stimulatineous on approximation in 2-Normed Almost Linear Space in International Journal of Engineering and Technology in January, 2014.
  • Dr. G. Usha Rani, Reader in Telugu published an article in Vangmayi.
  • Dr. G. Usha Rani, Reader in Telugu is a book previewer for Neerajanam and Manasa Prabodhamu.
  • Sri P.J. Robert, Lecturer in Physical Education has presented a Scientific paper on analysis of the changes on selected physical fitness and physiological profiles during two years of systematic training in an UGC sponsored national conference on Emerging Trends in Physical Education and Sports Sciences from 11th – 12th February, 2014 at Nagarjuna University, Guntur.
  • Dr. Mohano Behara, Lecturer in Botany has published two international publications 1. Review : Green Synthesis of silver and Gold Nano particles in November, 2013.  2. Synthesis of Green Metallic Nano particles (NPS) and applications in the year 2013.
  • Dr. Shaik Benazeer, Lecturer in Hindi published a paper on Saraswathi ISBN No. 978-81-921270-1-9 on Hindu Aur Urdu Kathasahitya me Nari.
  • Dr. K. Dayananda Reddy, Lecturer in Chemistry published an article on Thermodynamic properties of Binary mixtures containing 1-Alkanols in journal of Thermal analysis and caloriemeter, 115(2014), (1829-1834).
  • Dr. M. Sudhakara Reddy, Lecturer in Commerce has published two research papers in national journals.

Consultancy service

  • Department of Computer Science and Computer Applications provides consultancy services to social welfare department in the online submission of scholarship applications and online submission of applications of university examinations.
  • The department of Chemistry is providing consultancy services to all Mango Pulp industries in and around chittoor district.
  • The department of Chemistry is analyzing the water samples in and around chittoor town in identifying the potability status on the request of local people.

Extension Activities.

NSS

There are 02 NSS units in the college. They take up community development programmes. The enrolment is 150 for each unit.

  • National Educational Day was organized on 11-11-2013 to educate the community on the importance of education in connection with the Maulana Abdul Azad, the first education minister in Republic India.
  • Blood grouping for the students of P.V.K.N. Govt. College, Chittoor was organized on 28-11-2013 in order to know the blood groups.
  • World AIDS day was organized on 01-12-2013 and a mass rally was organized with the students to inculcate awareness in the public on the dreadful disease AIDS.
  • Blood donation camp was organized on 06-02-2014.

NCC

Activities of NCC for the year 2013-14

              We have a COY and Platoon in our college. 200 cadets were admitted during this academic year.

  • ‘B’ & ‘C’ certificate exams are conducted every year.
  • Blood donation camp was conducted and the cadets donated blood to Blood Bank at Govt. Hospital, Chittoor.
  • 05 NCC cadets attended Pre-Republic Day Camp.
  • 07 NCC cadets attended Army attachment camp.
  • 08 NCC cadets attended National Integration camp at Warangal & Manipur.
  • AIDS awareness and Anti-corruption rallies were held.
  • 02 NCC cadets attended National Trekking camp.

Sports and Games

  • 110 students participated in the S.V. University inter-collegiate tournaments during the year 2013-14.
  • Our students won the Kho-Kho winners title for the seventh time consecutively in the inter-collegiate tournaments conducted by S.V. University, Tirupati.
  • Kho-Kho Boys winners, Volley Ball Girls Runners, Kho-Kho Girls Winners have participated in State Level Meet at Karimnagar as a part of Yuvatharangam Games & Sports Meet – 2013.
  • 16 members in Basket Ball, Kho-Kho, Hockey, Kabbadi, Football, Volley Ball (Girls) have participated in South Zone Interuniversity Tournaments.

Consumer Club

It was organized by Sri K. Dandapani Reddy, Lecturer in Economics.

  • National consumer day was celebrated on 24-12-2013. Essay writing and Elocution competitions were conducted on “Empowering Consumers – Universality of Consumer Rights” in connection with National Consumer Day.
  • Sri K. Dandapani Reddy organized an awareness programme on National Voters Day on 25-01-2014.

DRC

District Resource Centre of our college acts as academic resource centre with reference to academic expertise, facilitates academic programmes for the benefit of the students and staff. DRC Coordinator Dr. T. Balasubramnayam Reddy, Reader in Physics successfully organized the following academic programmes. o   Human Values and Professional Ethics for three batches sponsored by APSCHE, Hyderabad in the month of July, 2013. As a part of curriculum, trained more than 150 lecturers in the entire chittoor district. o   Conducting common pre-final examination for all Govt. Degree Colleges in Chittoor district.  

       JKC

Jawahar Knowledge Centre of our college is giving training to the students in soft skills, communication skills and also conducting campus interviews by inviting the companies. o   JKC was coordinated by Sri M. Gopal Naidu, Lecturer in English. o   68 students were enrolled for training in summer batch. o   120 students were enrolled for regular training batch. o   ILM Bangalore conducted a campus placement on 28-11-2013, among 37 candidates, 07 were selected from this college. o   KELLOGGS, an MNC conducted a campus placement on 29-01-2014, among 44 candidates, 25 were selected from this college. o   Job Mela was conducted on 28-04-2014. In Hetero Pharmacy 27, AEGIS BPO Ltd. – 11 and MED Plus Pharmacy 17 candidates were selected. o   ICIC Bank conducted a campus placement on 30-05-2014, 18 candidates were selected.

Red Ribbon Club

o   Dr. T. Balasubramanyam Reddy, Reader in Physics is the Nodal RRC Coordinator. o   Dr. C. Venkatakrishnaiah, Lecturer in Zoology and Sri K. Sai Venkatesh, Lecturer in Botany are Master Trainers for the entire district. o   Dr. Mohano Behara, Lecturer in Botany and Sri D. Mallaiah, Lecturer in Telugu are the programme officers of this college. o   190 students were enrolled as volunteers in two units in our college. o   Elocution and Essay writing competitions were held on 30-11-2013 on the eve of Worlds AIDS Day.

Red Ribbon Club (RRC) District Level Activities

  • One day Workshop / Training for RRC Programme Officer Govt. / Aided / Un-aided colleges organized on 27th December, 2013 at P.V.K.N. Govt. College, Chittoor by the Nodal RRC Coordinator Dr. T. Balasubramanayam Reddy.
  • One day Red Ribbon Club (RRC) peer educator’s training programme for students was conducted on 30-12-2013 at P.V.K.N. Govt. College, Chittoor by the Nodal RRC Coordinator Dr. T. Balasubramanyam Reddy.
  • District level Essay Writing / Elocution competitions were conducted by the Nodal RRC Coordinator Dr. T. Balasubramanyam Reddy at P.V.K.N. Govt. College, Chittoor on 08-01-2014.

Career and Counseling Cell, UGC

Dr. K. Subramanyam Naidu, Reader in Physics is Convener of Career and Counseling Cell (UGC) and he had conducted several programmes during the year 2013-2014 for the benefit of the students.

  • Conducted the Constituency Level Youth Festival, Chittoor Constituency, in our college from 28-10-2013 to 30-10-2013 in collaboration with SETVENT, Tirupati (Vide Rc. No. 01 / SETVEN / YW / 2013-14, dt: 21-10-2013).
  • Campus Placements / recruitment drive on 29-01-2014, by an KELLOGS, MNS, from Sree City for the UG students of our college. 23 students were selected from our institution.

Scholarships

Majority of the students belong to marginalized sections and all of them are getting scholarships.

Alumni

Almost all the old students were enrolled under Alumni Association. Dr. S. Selvam, Lecturer in Economics is the coordinator for the Alumni Association. The Alumni assists in the developmental activities of the college.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University

Our college is a study centre for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University. It was established in the year 1986-87. It is imparting knowledge to the students of various categories like house wives, employed people, military personnel etc. This study centre is situated in a trilingual border of Telugu, Tamil and Kannada and is providing “education for all” as the slogan of the university. The motto of the university is “education at your door step”. It is fulfilling the motto of the university. It is imparting education in B.A., B.Com., and B.Sc. courses. Dr. K. Dayananda Reddy, Lecturer in Chemistry is the coordinator. I year, 325 students were admitted in various courses during the year 2013-14.

IGNOU – Indira Gandhi National Open University

Our college is a partner institution with IGNOU. It is imparting education to different categories of people including house wives, working persons in the private and public sector and unemployed youth. It was started in the year 2008. It is imparting education in M.Com, M.A. M.Sc. B.Com. B.A. courses, C. Functional English, CBZ, and CIC. Sri E. Chandra Naidu is coordinator.

Best Practices

To seek re-accreditation and autonomy the institution is run on certain core values. To foster global competencies among students, they are trained in soft skills.

  • The use of technology is encouraged to promote excellence among students.
  • The lecture-method is supplemented with the learner-centered activities such as Group discussions, Seminars, Quiz, etc.
  • Special Instructional programmes such as Tutorials, Remedial Coaching, Ward System were being implemented to guide slow-learners and under-achievers.
  • Teachers were trained to handle sophisticated educational technologies like the LCD projector and the power point presentations.
  • Students from rural areas are specially trained in communication skills in English.
  • Women students are sensitized on issues confronting them such as domestic violence, discrimination against the girl-child, male chauvinism, pre-natal tests, etc., Students were involved in AIDS Awareness campaigns, social forestry, literacy programmes, etc.,
  • Attempts are made to make the students as civilized, disciplined and skillful citizens of the nation.
